City lad enters Guinness book

A child from South Point School has an unusual claim to fame. The famed Guinness World Records Limited which publish Guinness Book of World Records has acknowledged Devendra Harne as the only living person with most fingers and toes, 25 in all.

The Guinness certificate states that Devendra has 12 fingers and 13 toes and this is the result of condition called Polydactylism. Devendra the letter from Guinness World Records Limited says Devendra is the ’Most Fingers and Toes’ living person. However, the letter further said the certificate does not guarantee automatic entry of record in the famed book which is brought out annually.

The deformity is not a handicap for Devendra who is the kid next door and attends school regularly. Devendra also attend to his daily chores without any help and is an ideal student. His father, Omprakash Harne, runs a men’s parlour on Manewada Road while mother Uma Devi, runs a beauty parlour from home.

The medical examination fit Devendra reflected that he is perfectly normal. The additional fingers and toes normally do not develop fully but in Devendra’s case they look perfectly normal. His parents approached Guinness Book with an application and after verification the world record books awarded Devendra the certificate.

Devendra says he does not feel any difficulty is using the extra fingers.

The doctors said such cases are rare, two in thousand children. Two Indians--Tribhu van and Trilok Yadav, both real brothers, were mentioned in the Guinness Book as persons with extra flesh. They had 24 fingers.
